Education is another important aspect of recovery. The Traverse House encourages members to explore the various educational opportunities available in our community. To help motivate members, the clubhouse offers educational scholarships each semester (three semesters per year) up to $400 per semester. Erin Dunner, a clubhouse member, is the point person for the Educational Unit at the clubhouse. She has a four-year degree from the University of California, Berkeley and is available to help interested members get started. Currently the Education Unit has four laptops and headphones to use for listening and watching educational materials online. GED prep materials, math and reading review materials will be added soon.
Northwestern Michigan College (NMC) in Traverse City and Baker College in Cadillac offer a variety of college degree courses. Extended Education through NMC also offers a broad range of non-credit courses for personal and professional development and enrichment. Northwestern Michigan College also partners with universities in Michigan to offer some college degree programs at the NMC University Center Boardman Lake campus.
The clubhouse Education Unit is hoping for donations of magazines and materials for subjects like science and history. They are also looking for volunteers/members who can help with an in-house tutoring program in math, english, science and history.
